About Dental Implants
Dental implants were originally developed for patients who lost their teeth and unfortunately could not wear dentures. It was in Sweden and Switzerland over 30 years ago that the treatment was originally developed. More so, over the last 20 years the area of focus for implant treatment has increasingly been on the replacement of either one or more missing teeth in patients who don’t wish to have a denture or simply want to replace removable dentures with teeth that are fixed in place.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Studies show excellent and ever improving success rates in patients who have had implants for long periods of time. As a result, they are now a very good option for patients in general good health that may have lost teeth for a broad range of different reasons. Current dental implants are designed to look and feel like natural teeth and with the correct maintenance from the right specialist they have the potential to last for many decades – and potentially – for a “lifetime”.
Do They Require Maintenance?
Yes, the ceramic crown or bridge placed on top of the implant will be the subject of normal ‘wear and tear’. It will require the same maintenance as any other routine dental work from a dentist. The deeper titanium dental implant portion will also need to be professionally cleaned and checked on an annual basis – as a minimum.
Who Would Benefit From Have A Dental Implant?
Many people use them as a replacement for front teeth which have been lost due to trauma or sporting accidents.
They are also used to replace teeth which have failed to respond to conventional dental treatment, for example root canal therapy or fractured large fillings. Quite often uncomfortable or loose dentures can be stabilized by using one or more dental implants.
How Does A Patient Know If They Can Have A Dental Implant?
The first step is to arrange a consultation with one of our specialist team to determine if this is going to be the right decision for you.
What Is The Length Of Time The Process Will Take?
Over one or two consultation sessions we will be able to gather the information needed to formulate the treatment plan. This process will involve consultation with both you and your general restorative dentist, in addition to the FDS specialist. Following this process your dental implant appointment will be arranged. The recommended period for implant integration with the surrounding tissues is approximately 6 to 10 weeks.
After this healing period the crown or bridge work on top of the implant can be completed by the restorative dentist over the next 2 to 4 weeks.
What Is The Dental Implant Procedure?
Usually, the dental implant can be placed in the dental chair. Similar to a dental filling procedure – the area in question is numbed using dental anaesthesia. The titanium section of the implant is then carefully positioned in the old tooth socket to replace the missing root of the tooth. The average time for this type of procedure is usually around 40 minutes.
During The Implant Healing Process Will I Have A Gap?
A temporary bridge or denture will be provided during the implant healing period. As such you won’t have to worry about any missing teeth post treatment.
How Uncomfortable Will The Treatment Be
The dental anaesthetic used in the procedure is the same as that used for a dental filling. After the implant is in place a mild headache tablet is usually all the medication required. Very rarely, a slightly more powerful analgesic may be required for the first night. The implant in the majority of cases will settle very quickly – pleasantly surprising most patients.
What Are The Possible Complications With Dental Implants
Similar to many other “minor” oral surgery procedures the complications for dental implants are minimal. By the use of a detailed pre-treatment examination and 3-D radiographs (Xrays) any potential risks associated with the dental implant procedure is minimised. If during the treatment planning phase any specific risk is identified – then it will be discussed in detail with you well before the dental implant is placed.
What Will I Get Back From The Health Fund?
Health fund rebates vary significantly from patient to patient based upon your chosen fund and level of ancillary cover. As such it is recommended that you present the outlined treatment plan to your fund before the commencement of treatment.
How Will I Look After My Dental Implant?
After your procedure is complete you will be given extensive details on how to monitor and maintain your implant. In many ways these instructions are similar to how you would look after your own teeth. Most importantly you must maintain healthy gums with regular daily cleaning
